At present there are two types of duty systems working in Wiltshire:-

(1) The Shift System where the personnel work a rota which lasts for eight days consisting of two days on day duty from 0900 to 1800 hours, followed by two night duties from 1800 to 0900 hours and then four days on leave.

During a day duty a member will spend much of his/her time in testing and servicing equipment, or testing hydrants and inspecting buildings that may present a special problem to the FRS in the event of fire. Part of every day (except public holidays) is spent on training and technical instruction. Routine work stops at 1715 hours when there is a period to prepare for the changeover of Watches. On public holidays only essential tasks are performed but personnel must remain on the station available for fire calls.

When on night duty, training and instruction occupies the early evening until 2200 hours on weekdays (2030 hours weekends). After supper and a period of relaxation, the personnel may rest if they want to, although they must be partly dressed and ready instantly to answer a fire call. In the morning there is a period of work from 0700 hours to 0800 hours. The Watch then has breakfast and prepares to leave duty at 0900 hours.

In Wiltshire there are three 'shift' stations - Swindon, Stratton St Margaret and Salisbury.

(2) The Day-crewing System where personnel attend a fire station between 0830 and 1700 hours on a rostered system covering the whole week and in addition during certain off duty periods, respond to fire calls from their home for additional pay.

In Wiltshire there are four 'Day-crewed' stations - Westlea, Trowbridge, Chippenham and Amesbury. If you are considering applying for vacancies at these stations you must have, or be able to provide, your own accommodation within a one mile radius of the station and the FRS may, in certain circumstances, be able to offer you financial assistance for any house move that may be necessary.
