INTRODUCTION

Thank you for taking the time to read this information and your interest in becoming a firefighter on the retained duty system.

Retained firefighters are hugely important to Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service and the communities they serve, as the following facts more than indicate:

• 60% of all firefighters in Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service are retained firefighters.
• Out of the 25 fire stations that make up the Fire & Rescue Service, 19 stations are crewed only by retained firefighters.
• Retained fire stations cover 60% of Wiltshire & Swindon - 830 square miles.
• At 6 fire stations we have retained firefighters working alongside their wholetime colleagues.
• Retained firefighters attend 40% of all incidents. Over 3,000 calls a year.
